Trump May Not Overlook Musk’s Negativity, According to Lutnick

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has spoken about the strained relationship between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. He said Trump may forgive Musk, but he will not forget the “negativity” around Musk’s departure from government ties.

From Friendship to Fallout

In an interview with NewsNation’s Batya Ungar-Sargon, Lutnick explained that Musk had once been one of Trump’s closest allies. Musk earned the president’s trust and admiration. But when he left Washington, his comments and actions turned “very negative.”

“I don’t think the president is going to forget that negativity,” Lutnick said. Still, he added that Trump would remain polite and friendly toward Musk in the future.

Campaign Support and DOGE Role

Musk played a major role in Trump’s 2024 campaign. He gave more than $290 million to Trump and other Republicans, according to Federal Election Commission records. In return, Musk was chosen to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The program aimed to cut waste, fraud, and abuse in federal agencies.

Rising Tensions and Musk’s Exit

Musk’s time at DOGE did not last long. He clashed with other Cabinet members and soon broke with Trump. In May, Musk stepped down. He later blasted Trump’s tax and spending bill on X, calling it a “massive abomination.”

The rift widened when Musk alleged that Trump’s name appeared in the Epstein files. That claim added fuel to their strained relationship.

Signs of Reconciliation

Despite the tension, Lutnick said Trump would still act “friendly” toward Musk. “The president is incredibly nice,” he said. “But do I think he’s going to forget? I don’t.”

Speculation about a reunion grew after the two men were seen together at an event in Arizona. Since then, Musk has voiced support for some Trump policies, hinting at possible cooperation ahead.

Looking Ahead

Lutnick has known Trump for more than 50 years. He said he often wrestled with Trump’s friendship with Musk. His conclusion: Trump can forgive, but he will not forget.
