New GitHub MCP Registry Offers Centralized Access to Trusted Servers

GitHub has rolled out the MCP Registry, a central directory where developers can find MCP servers. The goal is to make discovery faster, simpler, and more reliable.

Tackling a Common Developer Pain Point

Until now, MCP servers have been scattered across the web. Developers searched through random repos, separate registries, or long community threads. This process slowed down projects and frustrated teams.

Creators also felt the pain. They had to publish servers in multiple places and answer the same setup questions again and again. GitHub wants the new registry to fix that by giving everyone one clear home.

How the MCP Registry Works

Each server in the registry connects to its own GitHub repo. Developers can sort by GitHub stars or by community activity. These signals help them judge which servers are active, supported, and trustworthy.

GitHub says this approach builds confidence and leads to a healthier AI ecosystem. Developers can now explore options quickly instead of guessing which repos are reliable.

GitHub has already added its own MCP server to the directory. It lets AI agents connect directly with GitHub content such as repos, issues, and pull requests.

Partnering with Anthropic and the Open Source Community

GitHub is also working with Anthropic, the creator of MCP. Together they built the OSS MCP Community Registry, which connects to GitHub’s new registry. Any server listed in the open source registry will automatically appear in GitHub’s version.

This partnership helps avoid duplication and keeps metadata clear. It also makes it easier for contributors to publish servers at scale without extra overhead.

Why It Matters

GitHub wants the MCP Registry to become the fastest way for developers to find the right AI tools. With most MCP servers already living on GitHub, centralizing them makes discovery much easier.

The registry also supports a larger goal: a more open and interoperable AI ecosystem. Developers can now spend less time hunting for servers and more time building.

Whether you use GitHub Copilot, custom agents, or other AI tools, the MCP Registry gives you a simpler path from idea to integration.
