China Launches New Monopoly Battle Against Nvidia

China’s market regulator says Nvidia has broken the country’s anti-monopoly laws. Officials gave no details of the alleged violations but confirmed that the probe will continue.

The investigation comes as the United States and China hold new trade talks in Spain. Both sides are trying to ease a trade war that has dragged on for years.

Talks in Spain

Negotiators met for a second day in Madrid. The meetings were led by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

After the talks, Bessent said:

“We had very good discussions. We preferred to keep the focus on TikTok. Trade negotiations will continue in about a month at another location.”

TikTok Ban Under Review

During the meetings, President Donald Trump suggested progress had been made to stop a US ban on TikTok. The app had been facing a shutdown unless it secured a buyer in the US.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote:

“A deal was reached on a certain company that young people in our country very much wanted to save. They will be very happy! I will be speaking to President Xi on Friday. The relationship remains a very strong one!!!”

Trade Tensions Continue

This was the first high-level meeting since July. At that time, both countries agreed to extend a tariffs truce until November. The deal helped cut import taxes that had risen above 100% on some goods.

China began investigating Nvidia last December. The move is widely seen as retaliation in the global fight over semiconductors. The US has restricted sales of advanced chips to China, and Beijing has pushed back.

What’s Next

The Madrid talks also covered which American-made chips, including those from Nvidia, would be allowed into China. Nvidia has not responded to requests for comment.

Meanwhile, TikTok remains in the spotlight. Despite threats of a ban, Trump has softened his stance after gaining popularity on the app during the 2024 election.

In August, the White House even launched its own TikTok account. The platform now has an estimated 170 million US users, making it one of the world’s most popular social media apps.
